Hot chocolate, also known as hot cocoa or drinking chocolate, is a heated drink consisting of shaved or melted chocolate or cocoa powder, and heated. It usually contains a sweetener, such as sugar, and is often garnished with whipped cream or marshmallows. Hot chocolate made with melted chocolate is characterized by less sweetness and a thicker consistency.

Instructions
  1. To make the basic hot chocolate, combine the milk with the half-and-half in a small saucepan.
  2. Warm over medium-low heat, and then stir in the chocolate chips.
  3. Stir until melted (though there will still be lovely particles of chocolate throughout).
  4. If it's too chocolaty for you, splash in a little more milk.
  5. Add a splash of vanilla extract.
  6. If it's not quite sweet enough for you, add 1 teaspoon or so of sugar.
  7. Serve in mugs with whipped cream.
